Role Summary

The thermal attribute test engineer plans, executes, and analyzes vehicle tests to evaluate thermal system performance at a range of ambient temperature and operating conditions.


  • Plan and execute thermal calibration and validation testing.  This includes travel to off-site locations for testing in extreme hot and cold conditions.  
  • Plan and assist with vehicle instrumentation.  
  • Analyze and present results to leadership and cross functional teammates  
  • Assist in the development of mule test planning high level timing plans, mule/prototype builds, data analysis, 
  • Control system data collection and system calibration 
  • Real world and test chamber vehicle testing in extreme ambient conditions 
  • Travel to off-site locations for testing 
  • Work cross-functionally with HVAC, thermal, and controls development teams to ensure performance of aerothermal systems 
  • Identify, document, and highlight system design gaps and vehicle issues during all phases of testing 
  • Create testing documentation including test instructions, specifications, drawings and verification plans 
  • Track prototype test vehicle build, lead planning and documentation of instrumentation needed for system development and validation testing 
  • Drive prototype vehicles during certain tests in the real world and in test chamber 
  • Engage in subjective evaluation to identify system failure modes 
  • Familiarity using online tools such as Jira/Jama, common DAQ systems used for data collection during testing 


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited University.  The candidate must have strong engineering fundamentals. 
  • 2-3 years of experience in automotive thermal system or HVAC development. 
  • Experience with thermal instrumentation, data acquisition, and post processing  
  • Working knowledge of automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and relevant debugging tools 
  • A proven track record of problem solving and independent root cause analysis 
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills 
  • Experience running and maintaining a variety of vehicle level and component level tests 
  • Team first mentality 
  • Innate curiosity about all things automotive 
  • Ability to work autonomously 
  • Minimum age of 21
  • No driving related suspensions or revocation of Driver License (within a 3-5 year period)
  • No drug or alcohol related driving incidents in the last 3 years
  • No more than 1 serious moving violation in the last 3 years
  • Must have a valid driver's license in the state of residence that you will be driving/operating a vehicle
  • Will be subject to continuous Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) monitoring

Pay Disclosure

Salary range for California Based Applicants: $121,000 - $139,000 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).


Benefits Summary: Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
