Role Summary
The technical responsibility of the role is to cover a multitude of aspects integrating a high level of safety supporting the Rivian amazing design. In 2023 both our R1S and R1T received the highest score, Top Safety Pick +, in the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) test.
You will work with leaders across the business to ensure teams are collaborating effectively and are aligned with strategic priorities. Ultimately you are responsible for your team’s output and guide the engineering teams on what it takes to achieve safetyperformance.
In this role, you will need to unblock and enable your team members building an effective and efficient way of working aligned, with the vehicle program targets and timing. You will drive the organization’s ability to be smart and nimble and deliver on time, while staying innovative and creative in finding new solutions to challenges.
Responsibilities
- Build a cohesive and focused team through effective communication and leadership.
- Own and secure on time deliveries to the engineering teams and manage a team capable to deliver safety performance on a vehicle program.
- Work alongside attribute leaders in other areas and Vehicle Concept teams to provide direction on what is needed from a safety standpoint
- Drive the definition and development of crash performance with visibility of all affected sub-systems and components through a systems approach, working with all other affected domains and attributes.
- Continuously drive the development of the way of working in the team to align with the changes in business needs in the most efficient way.
- Develop the virtual, component and vehicle test plan to achieve the Rivian safety targets. Help team develop DVP for the program and track progress toward attribute sign-off.
- Ability to guide the team to design the vehicle, to interpret CAE and test results and develop countermeasures.
- Lead discussions in forums within Safety and Outside to bring resolutions to identified gaps.
- Collaborate with program management, systems engineering, manufacturing, studio, and other development teams.
- Mentor team members and fresh engineers.
Qualifications
- B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 10+ years of experience in automotive Safety Engineering
- Over 7 years of experience managing engineering teams and delivering to high volume production, including having developed at least 1 vehicle into production
- Strong background in Crash Structures for high-speed, low-speed, quasi-static crash modes as well as global VRUP (Vulnerable Road User Program)
- Ability to report to senior management and report accurate information in a clear and concise manner.
- Working knowledge of regulatory, certification and rating requirements
- Hands-on attitude, able to solve problems from a first principles perspective
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment and positively lead a team through transitions.
- Good knowledge of Regulatory requirements and Consumer ratings (current and future) for North America, Europe, and China.
- Strong background in Crash Structures for high-speed, low-speed, quasi-static crash modes as well as VRUP.
- Should have delivered at least 1 program in crash structures and/or VRUP.
Pay Disclosure
Salary range for California Based Applicants: $218,200-$272,800 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
