Job Description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

Develop and lead a team of service engineers and engineering technicians to improve the serviceability and remanufacturability of future Rivian products, through close collaborative partnerships with cross-functional teams. The team must identify design for serviceability requirements for each program, collaborate with packaging / design engineering teams though the iterative design process, break down systems to appropriate service part levels, identify special tooling needs, and develop repair processes from concept to validation. The Manager, Service Engineering will report to the Sr. Manager, Service Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead a world class engineering team to establish best practices and standards for design for serviceability requirements of Rivian products – including design for diagnosability, service part identification, service tool identification, component accessibility, conceive service procedures, and design for remanufacturability
  • Coordinate the daily activities of service engineers and engineering technicians, responsible for low voltage, high voltage, propulsion and charging system components
  • Lead the team participating in design reviews of future products; recommending improvements to repairability, extend useful product life and develop second life use
  • Collaborate with engineering design through pilot and validation build phases, to gain exposure to future products and identify design for serviceability issues
  • Study the feasibility to repair, replace and remanufacture components within each system, quantifying impacts and gaining stakeholder consensus on overall program strategy
  • Identify and validate parts, tools, and processes needed to perform effective field repairs, in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Identify parts, tools, and processes needed to remanufacture major components, in collaboration with remanufacturing engineering
  • Develop support strategies for existing units in field operation, during production changes or end of serial production
  • Define emerging issues and escalate through closed-loop problem resolution processes, supporting triage / root cause investigation in close collaboration with engineering
  • Coach and develop the team to exceed customer expectations, as you develop a culture of high quality and serviceability within the organization

Qualifications

  • 7+ years’ experience in engineering, manufacturing, and/or service operations
  • BS or equivalent experience in a related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of the engineering discipline (e.g. mechanics, physics, metallurgy, manufacturing methods, electronics, software languages, control systems) – expertise with high voltage systems is highly advantageous
  • Demonstrated technical leadership of individuals, groups or teams – able to adapt style based on individual(s) and circumstance
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to efficiently manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously
  • Proven success in driving process and results in a cross-functional environment
  • High level analytical ability, where problems are unusual and complex
  • Able to travel freely between local team facilities – including Tustin, Torrance and Carson – as needed, and up to 10% elsewhere
