Role Summary

Rivian’s Commercial Technology group is responsible for the end-to-end implementation of the digital platforms supporting our customers' journey from the very first time they interact with the brand, through purchasing their first Rivian, to taking delivery, and supporting them through their ownership experience. We are developing a unique and best-in-class direct-to-consumer technology platform, with deep integration into our software ecosystem, comprising of both customer and internal facing applications, across web, mobile, and physical locations.

As Director of Software Engineering, Commercial Tech (Domain Lead), you will lead one of the domain teams within Commercial Tech. The domains include Marketing, Sales, Fulfillment, Service, Charging, Identity & Platform, and B2B. This is a high impact and critical role, leading a team of talented engineers, and working closely with leaders across the business to deliver on an inspiring vision.


Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor multiple engineering teams focused on consumer-facing products, ensuring high performance, technical excellence, and alignment with business objectives.
  • Develop and execute an ambitious technology roadmap under tight timelines, with the ability to work through ambiguity, and problem solve in a fast-paced environment.
  • Partner with Product Management, Design, Program, Data and Business teams to drive user-centric innovation and impactful features.
  • Collaborate closely with other Commercial Tech Engineering leaders to ensure a cohesive cross-platform experience.
  • Foster a culture of engineering best practices, including scalable architecture, performance optimization, security and high availability.
  • Collaborate with Platform Engineering to enhance observability, reliability, and system performance.
  • Hire, develop, and retain top engineering talent, fostering a culture of innovation and empowerment.
  • Champion cross-functional collaboration across technology, commercial and business teams to drive success.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in engineering leadership roles.
  • Proven experience leading large-scale, consumer-facing applications.
  • Deep expertise in modern web and app technologies, cloud platforms, and scalable architectures.
  • Experience leading distributed teams and working in fast-paced, agile environments.
  • Strong product and business acumen, with the ability to translate user needs into technical solutions.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a track record of building high-performing engineering teams.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Deep understanding of software development methodologies and best practices.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field preferred.
