Job Description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

Join a high functioning team at Rivian where you will play a critical role in defining the driving dynamics of our products. You will be responsible for helping the team optimize the dynamics attributes of Rivian vehicle programs through the use of system and vehicle level simulation models. You will own the evaluation of internal development and competitive benchmark vehicles from a kinematics and compliance perspective as well as simulating full vehicle ride and handling behavior to help the team develop program targets and test methods.

This role offers a unique opportunity to apply first principles, thinking to solve complex vehicle dynamics problems and to work on cutting-edge steering and suspension technologies. You will be required to collaborate across multiple teams such as software controls, NVH, durability and chassis organizations, bringing teams together to solve engineering challenges. You will have the chance to develop robust, real-time solutions, and make significant contributions to Rivian’s mission of creating innovative, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop suspension, steering, brakes and other subsystem models within ADAMS, CarMaker and MatLab/Simulink.
  • Develop and build detailed full vehicle simulation models, including the use of flexible bodies.
  • Perform correlation activities that align the Adams and CarMaker simulation models with physical test data as well as validate subsystem plant models.
  • Utilize full vehicle simulation models to optimize the development of the vehicle platform by running “what-if” scenarios based around dynamic steering handling and ride.
  • Interpret benchmark K&C, steering, handling and ride data to provide insight that guides system and component level target setting
  • Evaluate and inform Chassis architectural decisions using simulation models and Vehicle Dynamics knowledge, within following areas of focus:
    • Steering
    • Handling
    • Ride comfort
    • Braking
    • Acceleration performance
  • Work collaboratively across all vehicle subsystems to ensure holistic dynamics attribute targets are being met
  • Communicate cross-functionally and interact with other engineering teams to ensure development workstreams are aligned and we are all working toward a common goal.
  • Work hard, exceed expectations, challenge industry conventions, and relentlessly strive to make truly exceptional products

Qualifications

  • B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, Master’s preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in automotive Chassis development with a focus on Vehicle Dynamics
  • Experience in Multi-Body Dynamics tools, preferably ADAMS or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD software, preferably CATIA V5 or V6
  • Experience in C, C++, MATLAB, Python, Simulink. Gitlab experience is a plus
  • Working knowledge of steering and suspension systems and how they impact vehicle dynamics attributes such as ride and handling.
  • Strong first principles background
  • An ability to work autonomously with little guidance or direction and a desire to learn and grow technically
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
