Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced AGV/AMR System Integration Engineer to join our team. You'll be a key player in redefining the standards for manufacturing and material flow systems, leveraging innovative technologies and their integration into our production lines. This role will focus on the complex, end-to-end integration and implementation of Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) & Automated Mobile Robot (AMR) systems, ensuring they seamlessly interface with our production equipment, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and other critical factory infrastructure. As a hands-on problem-solver and technical leader, you will be responsible for executing large system integrations of AGV/AMRs to enable Rivian to scale our manufacturing capabilities. This role is based at our Normal, IL facility and reports directly to a Manager, Manufacturing Engineering.
Responsibilities
- Lead the full lifecycle of AGV system implementation, from conceptual design and vendor selection to on-site commissioning and launch, with a specific focus on system integration.
- Own the integration of AGV and mobile robotics systems with existing manufacturing equipment, including conveyors, robotic arms, dunnage and fixtures.
- Design, simulate, and implement AGV and material flow solutions aimed at high-performance, extensibility, and seamless data propagation between components for production tracking, manufacturing systems, and diagnostics.
- Conduct comprehensive Functional Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) to validate that AGV systems meet all performance, safety, and integration requirements.
- Develop and maintain common engineering standards and technical specifications for AGV equipment, processes, and system integration frameworks to ensure consistency and quality across all Rivian manufacturing centers.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues within the factory, tracing problems to their source, and partnering with cross-functional teams to drive effective resolutions.
- Apply cost engineering principles and techniques to analyze, control, and optimize project and operational costs related to AGV system implementation and integration.
- Collaborate with internal platform development teams to propose and develop new strategies for AGV automation and to improve the configuration and deployment time.
- Ensure all deployed systems adhere to internal company policies, industrial safety standards, and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Maintain a strong understanding of the latest technologies and digitization trends relevant to AGV system integration, and proactively apply this knowledge to improve processes and solutions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or a related field).
- Minimum of 5+ years of combined experience in automation engineering, robotics, and complex system integration.
- Proven technical knowledge of AGV/AMR systems, including their hardware and software components, as well as an in-depth understanding of industrial communication protocols.
- Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing large-scale capital projects from a system integration perspective.
- Proficiency in data analysis and root cause analysis methodologies to resolve complex manufacturing and integration issues.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse teams, including vendors, plant leadership, and internal stakeholders.
- Expected travel up to 50% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or a related field).
- Direct experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) in a manufacturing environment, particularly with a focus on factory and system launches.
- Experience in the automotive or electric vehicle industry, with knowledge of material flow and process applications.
- Proficiency with manufacturing execution systems (MES) and their integration with automated equipment.
- Knowledge of PLC programming and troubleshooting (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
- Experience with manufacturing simulation software (e.g., FlexSim, Arena).
