Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary
As a Senior PCB Designer at Rivian, you will lead the physical realization of complex hardware systems. You will act as the bridge between electrical intent and mechanical reality, owning the entire PCB lifecycle from library management and schematic capture to advanced layout and manufacturing handoff. This role requires a high degree of autonomy, technical precision, and the ability to navigate a fast-paced, global engineering environment.
Responsibilities
- Design & Layout: Lead high-density PCB layouts, defining stack-ups, power planes, and complex routing. Execute component placement and net connections with a focus on signal integrity and thermal management.
- Collaborative Integration: Partner with Electrical Engineers to capture schematics and define net class constraints. Collaborate with Mechanical Engineers to establish board outlines, keep-out zones, and integrate hardware like heatsinks and mounting terminals.
- Librarian Leadership: Manage the PCB library by creating high-fidelity schematic symbols and footprints. Coordinate with Component Engineers to request and release new parts via the Rivian PLM system.
- Constraint Management: Set and manage rigorous design constraints, including creepage and clearance, current density, and thermal requirements.
- DFM & Standards: Implement Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) rules to ensure high yields. Ensure all designs comply with IPC-2221, 2222, and 7351 standards.
- Manufacturing Handoff: Generate comprehensive fabrication and assembly packages (Gerber, ODB++, supporting drawings). Review and approve technical queries (EQs) from contract manufacturers to ensure seamless production.
Qualifications
- Experience: 5+ years of PCB design experience, with at least 2 years of professional Altium Designer expertise.
- Technical Mastery: Deep understanding of IPC standards (IPC-2221, 2222, 7351). Experience with high-power electronics and thermal relief strategies.
- PLM Proficiency: Proven track record of managing parts and assemblies within a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
- Communication: Exceptional English communication skills, capable of seamless collaboration across a 9-hour time zone shift with our California-based teams.
- Education: BS in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field (or equivalent professional experience).
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- IPC Certification: IPC CID or CID+ strongly preferred.
- Multi-Tool Fluency: Experience with Xpedition Enterprise or Cadence OrCAD/Allegro in addition to Altium.
- Industry Background: Experience in automotive, EV, or aerospace sectors.
